Yesterday I had a conversation with my sister that really made me think about my own life. I don’t want to get into details but for years she has talked about taking on a new craft. She recently had the opportunity to join a group and learn from experienced people. She is making dozens of excuses why “not” to do this now. I started thinking about why we do this. As children, we plunge into anything and everything that we are interested in. Some things work out and some we “play” with a while and leave. As adults the excuses flow – I don’t have time… Why should I spend time on something I don’t have time to do right… I shouldn’t take time to myself… I have too many things on my to do list already. ANALYSIS – PARALYSIS!
This morning I woke up and asked myself – What can I do today that I’ve wanted to do for years? The thoughts just streamed and suddenly I felt energized. I started a list of things I really want to do — lets keep focused on the the DO part. Don’t let your thoughts interfere – you’ll waste more time on it!
Allocate some “Play Time” TODAY! What will energize your body and soul? It may be 15 minutes or it may be 2 hours. Remember this is play — you don’t need to finish! You do not need to be successful. You do not need to be perfect. It is not play if it something you “should do” or something someone expects you to do. Play is free form. Play is creative. Just do it, have fun and be open to new ideas and thought.
Here is a link to long definition of “play“. (Does it seem strange that play is categorized under HEALTH!) . Here is my extraction of key phrases!
- To occupy oneself
- To deal or behave carelessly or indifferently
- To move or seem to move quickly, lightly, or irregularly
- To pretend to be
- To perform or put into effect
- Activity engaged in for enjoyment or recreation.
- Fun or jesting
- An attempt to obtain something
- Action, motion, or use
- Freedom or occasion for action
It is early in the morning and Peter is still sleeping. I’ll update you on my play time later. Share your experiences!
