Maui Snorkeling: It’s All About the Visibility

I try to get out and enjoy the beach once in awhile. Well, let me clause that. I don’t do the “lay on the beach scene”. I go to participate in water activities. Sometimes I walk the beach. Last Monday, I was out at Ahihi Kinau’s Waiala Cove (a.k.a. Ahihi Cove) to do water quality testing. I try to squeeze in a short snorkel to start the week off in a great way! I was also playing around with video on my Canon ELPH PowerShot 300HS w/underwater enclosure.
As I was looking back at the video, I realized I had captured a good lesson in visibility. It’s a little long but I couldn’t cut too much of the turtle out!
When snorkeling, please remember that coral is a live animal. Coral lives on rocks; almost any rock! Coral is slow growing so it may be 2 years old before you’ll even notice it. So, please do not stand on rocks! Stand on sand. The best snorkeling sites are mostly rocks; that’s because most fish call coral reefs “home”.
