This is related to her heart condition; She may have this even if we get her kidneys under control. I read online about about a 10 year old cat; they said that it took 5-6 days after coming off IV for him to start showing signs of his normal self so I’m still hopeful.
I just watched Widgit and Oprah. Oprah was talking about overwhelmed mom’s. Her primary guest was a woman who was an vice-principal. Her husband had a dentist appointment so she was supposed to take her baby to day-care. She drove to day-care, realized that it was to drop her baby off and went to buy donuts. She then drove to school, went through whole day while her daughter was in the car and died of heat stroke.
I can’t say we are all overwhelmed. But the focus on keeping busy, doing everything and being perfect makes us lose perspective.
So tonight, I have tons of things to do but my primary focus is on watching my little Widgit who came home from the hospital today. She is pretty out of it but happy to be home. See her blog. I’m worried about her heart. The vet said that last night she had some fluid in her lungs which often means that there is build up around the heart. It is an issue for cats getting kidney treatment that have heart issues. So I’ll put many things aside and watch and love my little Widgit.
Last night it rained…for a short bit.
This morning…I woke up to cool breezes and gray, blustery skies.
It is a cool 72 degrees (yes we Mauians think 72 is cool). The ocean water is warmer than that.
The humidity is high and the flowers and leaves all look a bit brighter.
The birds are quieter…maybe a little bit anyway.
I have no reason that I need it to be sunny today.
I will enjoy this beautiful (in a different way) kind of day.
It is quiet without our Widgit here. We took her to the vet and he said her kidneys are failing. She only weighs 6 lbs 5oz; she used to be double that! She is officially littler than Moosh.
She is going to be in the hospital getting IV electrolytes for 5 days. He said that there is a good chance that they’ll be able to get her “stabilized” and she can come home. Good news is that her heart seems ok. Bad news is that she was “cranky” Widgit and bit Peter in the hand. His turn; she bit me at the vet several years ago!
There is a chance if the stars align and god blesses us that this is not the end for our Widgit. We have to pay bucco bucks for her hospital stay and tests. Then we have to learn to administer (I can just see our little fighting Widgit!) subcutaneous injections weekly.
No guarantees… just lot of prayers…but I’ve stopped crying!
I am hoping for the best. I read blogs where cats quit eating and were sick for weeks and then got better. My “little Widgit” has been losing weight and eating less for months. 3 days ago she quit eating regularly but would eat Ahi and Jerky. 2 days ago she quit drinking. She slept most the day but she still had bright eyes and would leap between the countertop and dining table.
Today, she just growls at us to stay away.
We have a vet appointment at 10:00.
I know Widgit is 14 years old. When we moved to Maui, we paid $1000+ to confirm she has a heart condition that they can do little about. We paid another $350 in tests to find out she had sign of early kidney failure; we bought her special vet food that after 4 days she decided she hated. We kept her on it while she lost weight and learned to forage for food.
I keep telling myself that things always happen in 3’s. A good friend in Maui had her dear old cat run away 3 weeks ago; my friend Tamara lost her Zeke suddenly to a brain tumor; my sister Karin lost her precious dog Molly earlier this week. That’s 3 so we should be fine.
Hoping and praying and crying…
My original blog was called the Maui Minute so that it made me think about blogging in a minute…not taking too long. I liked the name “The Maui Minute” and decided to use it for my professional blog but when you blog professionally, it tends to take longer.
Anyway, today was a “brain dead” day. I just had tons of brain-dead tasks to do. Here’s the list (I do like lists):
- 260 copies of newsletter + cover letters, started folding…
- 260 envelopes printed which takes forever because my printer will only auto-feed if you have max of 7 envelopes in the feeder. So I feed, do a little something else, check and feed again.
- 3 loads of laundry + Laundry folding + ironing (yes…do you believe it!)+ making the bed
- 3 lbs of sweet potatoes dug up from garden + handfuls of basil and green onions
- Home-blessing (well upstairs anyway!)
Now I am ready to start the week! Brain-dead days are needed occasionally.
Hope you have a great week…I’m doing a buyer dance…looking for some buyers!
