Some of you know that I’m an Oprah fan. Well I’ve never liked Dr. Oz much but decided to watch his 2 part series with claims of ability to live longer and have more energy. It is the “Have more energy” part that I’m interested in!
So he tells us about this “Green Drink” that he has for breakfast and makes it. Everything in it is things I like and often have in the kitchen. I tell Peter to pick up a cucumber and spinach. Well spinach in Hawaii is sometimes tough to find so I use some of the salad mix we buy. I throw small cut up pieces into our new blender. Well only about 1/2 fit in the blender. I turned on the blender and I got stuff whirring in the bottom while most the stuff stayed on top. Ok, I didn’t buy a professional blender so lets put it in the food processor. Ok, this seems to be working better…but now I have a good “green sludge”. I put it back in the blender to puree a little more…and add some water. Then some more water. My blender is full. I pour some off and taste it. Not bad but still thick green and not very “drinkable”. I add more water. The recipe says it is supposed to give 2 8 oz drinks. Well from my calculations, I now have about 28 ounces. And it’s still a little sludgy. I’m drinking it but I don’t know if I’ll do it again. I don’t know if the stuff I put in the refrigerator will last. I suspect that you just need a super powerful blender to make this work.
Here’s the recipe (that I found after making it but mine was close). Notice that they don’t tell you whether to peel apples or cucumbers or not. I figured they have edible peels that are good fiber so I didn’t peel them.
Dr. Oz Green Drink Recipe
* 2 apples, cored
* 2 big handfuls of spinach
* 1/2 cup of chopped parsley
* 1 celery stick, chopped
* 1 thumbnail length of ginger root, peeled
* 1 lemon – juice only (use peel slice for zest)
* 1 medium cucumber
Place ingredients in a blender, add 4 oz. spring water or a handful of ice cubes, then puree quickly for one minute. Makes two glasses of Dr. Oz’s green drink.
The green drink has a strong taste and if you are used to drinking soda or sweet tea, the taste will take some getting used to. Dr. Oz suggests adding other items at first to sweeten the green drink to your taste.
Green drink – Optional ingredients:
* 2nd cucumber
* raw carrot
* unsweetened fruit juice
I only used one apple and thought it tasted fine. The texture was the worst part. So I probably did get 3 servings of vegies and 1 fruit in my large glass. Probably very few calories. BUT TOO MUCH WORK! On the good side, the blender and food processor parts were very easy to clean. I guess for the same reason that this drink should help clean you out!
