We returned home today from a great trip to the Big Island. Hurricane Flossie did fizzle leaving us with a only a cloudy day and little wind chop.
Before we left, my banana “tree” in the backyard had collapsed under the weight of a large bunch of green apple bananas. I propped it up and hoped they would wait until our return to ripen. Wait they didn’t. Ripen they did. They are VERY tasty. I did not weigh the bunch but my guess is that I now have about 25 pounds of bananas. They all ripened at the same time. They are so ripe that most are falling off the the bunch. A few went into the compost pile because they had already been smooshed. Most came to the kitchen. Most have been peeled and put in the freezer for future use in smoothies, banana sorbet and/or banana bread. I’ve researched a few banana recipes and might try them.
Did you know that a banana can lower blood pressure, reduce stress, cure a hangover, reduce itching from a mosquito bite and improve your brain power? There are many other good attributes. I guess we’ll be super smart for a few days! Can 2 people possibly use this many bananas? I’ll take some into work. I’ll take a few to other friends.
On a different note, we had our last mango of the season drop from the tree. We still have mango in the freezer. A plumelo dropped but it was too squishy so I put it in the compost pile. There are still plenty of plumelos on the tree; I’m not sure what to do with them! I grew up where we would can and freeze vegetables. This fruit thing is pretty new to me!
Our kittens were apparently having gecko parties in our absence. I have only seen one baby gecko that came in with the bunch of bananas but there seems to be quite a few gecko droppings — including right on our coffee table! I hope our geckos survived!
Great vacation but its good to be home!
