Kahului is the heart of Maui. Almost 100% of Maui visitors land at Kahului’s International Airport or come off a Cruise ship at the Kahului port. Most Maui residents visit Kahului weekly to stop at Costco, Home Depot, Walmart and other bigbox as well as family-owned stores.

Established as “Dream City” after World War II, many imigrant farm workers returned from the war and could get a $40,000 VA loan to buy a Kahului home. You’d be surprised how many are still owned by those families today! Kahului has grown and is home to the University of Hawaii’s Maui College, Maui Medical Center and Maui’s only real mall – Queen Ka’ahumanu Center.
You can find a wide array of Kahului homes and condos. Older “Dream City” neighborhoods have concrete block homes (many upgraded over the years!) on large lots. There are popular new neighborhoods at Maui Lani feel more like California and gated communities at The Bluffs and The Island. Average Prices are $350,000-$400,000.
Pronunciation: Kah-hoo-loo-ee (Before I moved to Maui, I used to call it Ka-Huey-Louey.) In Hawaiian, Kahului means an athletic contest, especially championship match though I bet it got it’s name from a secondary meaning of “Crescent-shaped disposition of soldiers on a battlefield.” Take a look at Kahului Bay and it’s a perfect crescent.
