South Maui Real Estate
Ma’alaea is best known for it’s harbor and the Maui Ocean Center. It is also home to the Pacific Whale Foundation. There are many vacation and long-term condos in Ma’alaea (pronounced like Jumbalaya) and and occasional oceanfront home. Most of the condos have spectacular ocean views! Unfortunately, the reef at Ma’alaea has mostly disappeared, a sad ecology story in the last 20 years.
5 miles south, along Sugar Beach, you’ll hit Kihei. Realtors talk about Kihei as North Kihei, Central Kihei and South Kihei. There appears to be different definitions used by REALTORS than county planning people! My tax info says that I’m in Central Kihei while REALTORs say my home in North Kihei. Generally prices get higher the further south you go but there are always exceptions to the rule!
North Kihei has both gorgeous oceanfront vacation rentals and a wide variety of of homes. The beaches are perfect for long walks and weekend escapes. You won’t find the great snorkeling here but windsurfers and kite-surfers delight in the afternoon winds. Homeowners complain about the “black snow” that descends on the area after cane burning occurs. We all hope this practice will cease one day but until then it is important to note that cane burning is usually seasonal; they don’t burn during peak tourist seasons. Wonder why?
Central Kihei is where the hub of Kihei business is. The Tech Park, Elleair Golf Course, Safeway, Azeka Center, Long’s, Kihei Community Center, Kihei Elementary School and Lokelani Intermediate are all within blocks of each other. There are not many vacation rentals except just north of Azeka Center. There are beautiful oceanfront homes along Halama and Uluniu as well as moderate priced homes and condos.
South Kihei is a both a popular vacation spot but homeowners love the majestic ocean views as they move up mauka from Kihei Road. Kihei Road in South Kihei is lined with vacation condos, hotels and beachparks. There is also a small boat harbor for quick easy, snorkel trips to Molokini!
On the far south end of South Kihei and mauka of the Pi’ilani Highway, you’ll find Maui Meadows. A unique neighborhood built mostly in the 1970’s, most lots are 1/2 acre in size and many have both home and ‘ohana (detached cottage for family, friends or extra income!) Although some homes are modest, many are large, interesting and have spectacular ocean views.
Wailea is a premiere resort destination with it’s manicured trees, golf courses and beautiful beaches. You’ll find lots of condos and homes available. Travel further south to Makena and the manicured road gradually changes taking you to exclusive remote area of Makena. Makena is in the same MLS Search District as Wailea. That said, Makena is a world of it’s own…ask me how I know!
South Maui Real Estate offers a wide variety of homes, condos and land at just about every price point and lifestyle preference.
